MooseFS PRO only.
PRO Personal
MooseFS PRO is licensed in two tiers, PRO Personal and PRO Enterprise. Both tiers run MooseFS PRO. The license separates them. Every PRO license caps used raw space at the capacity it was issued for. A Personal license is issued for at most 200 TiB, an Enterprise license for an agreed capacity. A Personal license also permits personal, non-commercial use only.
PRO Personal covers personal, non-commercial use only
A PRO Personal license allows you to run MooseFS PRO for personal purposes. The license does not cover commercial use, whatever the size of the installation. An instance that serves a business runs under PRO Enterprise instead. You agree with MooseFS on which tier a given installation needs. The software itself does not check.
MooseFS decides whether a particular use is commercial. If you are unsure whether your use counts as commercial, ask MooseFS support to assess your use before you rely on a Personal license.
A Personal license is issued for at most 200 TiB
A Personal license is not issued for more than 200 TiB of used raw space. That figure is a term of the Personal tier. The software enforces the capacity written in the license file, whatever the tier. A larger cluster runs under PRO Enterprise, with a license for an agreed capacity. An Enterprise license caps used raw space at that agreed figure. How licensing works covers what used raw space counts and how a running instance compares its usage against the licensed figure.
Inside that cap, two capacities are free of charge. Up to 10 TiB, the license is the Personal license that every Master Server already has. That license requires nothing from you. Up to 20 TiB, the license is also free after you register your installation with MooseFS. Above that, up to 200 TiB, you agree on the price with MooseFS, as for any other license.
Every PRO installation starts at 10 TiB
Every PRO Master Server has a Personal license for 10 TiB of used raw space. That license comes with the Master Server. No file on disk holds it. A PRO Master Server that is not supplied with a license file runs under that Personal license. A cluster that you bring up without a license file of your own therefore runs. That cluster runs under Personal terms until you provide a license file. Putting your own file in place is a deployment step, covered in install a license: where the file goes and how each Master Server picks it up.
Community Edition asks for no license at all
Community Edition needs no license file and sets no limit on total data size, usage time, or number of Chunkservers. Community Edition is distributed under version 2 of the GNU General Public License. That license limits the edition by its terms, rather than by a file or a figure. How licensing works covers those terms. Community Edition therefore differs from either PRO tier in two ways: the capabilities that it includes, and the cap on used raw space that every PRO license sets. CE and PRO: feature matrix lists both, one by one. Editions: Community and PRO defines what an edition is and why it is fixed when the packages are built.
Support for a Personal installation is bought separately
A support contract is not part of any license and is bought on its own. Support contracts are offered for PRO Personal, for PRO Enterprise, and for Community Edition. A support contract can therefore cover a Personal installation as well. The level of the contract, rather than the tier the cluster runs on, determines what the contract covers. How licensing works covers the purchase itself.
